Using moisturizer with SPF - the Truth!

My moisturizer has SPF so I don’t need sun cream for day-to-day UV protection, right?

Great question! But…ummmh… no!

Here is why.

While SPF in moisturizers provides a layer of protection against UV rays from the sun, don’t rely on it alone. It is not sufficient for a couple of reasons:

  1. The effectiveness of the SPF depends on the amount of product you apply. You would need to apply a lot more moisturizer than is applied when using as a moisturizer.
  2. The durability of the SPF is problematic. Sunscreen formulations are often designed to be more water-resistant and durable, especially if you’re sweating (or swimming). Moisturizers, on the other hand, may not have the same level of staying power.
  3. Another factor to consider is that moisturizers and sunscreens are regulated differently.

In Canada sunscreens are regulated under the FDA and must have a Drug Identification Number (DIN) or Natural Product Number (NPN). They are evaluated for factors like SPF level, water resistance, and broad-spectrum coverage. The regulatory standards help ensure that the product provides the protection it claims. Moisturizers, on the other hand, are classified as cosmetics and do not undergo the same level of scrutiny for sun protection.

It’s like knowing your sunscreen has gone through boot camp training, while your moisturizer is more like a casual stroll – both good, but one is specifically geared for battle against those UV rays! Given that UV rays accelerate aging (fine lines, wrinkles, sagging, irregular pigmentation, the list goes on) as well as cause skin cancer, I see SPF included in cosmetics as a lovely add on, but it doesn’t take the place of a daily dedicated SPF!
