Hayfever Out of Control? Discover Relief with HayTox Treatment

Are your allergies driving you crazy? Read on to find out how you can benefit from the new treatment on offer at Merrion Medical Aesthetics.

What is HayTox Treatment?
HayTox is a new treatment available for those suffering from hayfever and nasal allergies, such as allergies to dust, cat, dog, and horse hair. Standard treatments for hayfever have traditionally included allergen avoidance, saline nasal rinses, nasal steroids, and oral antihistamines. Some patients also undergo desensitization or immunotherapy. HayTox is a promising option for patients who do not get enough relief from, or prefer not to take, nasal steroids or daily oral antihistamines.
How Does HayTox Work?
HayTox is a nasal spray application of a neuromodulator (often called Botox) administered directly to the nasal lining. The botulinum toxin acts on nerve endings, blocking them from transmitting signals to the overactive submucosal glands that secrete nasal fluids. This process helps alleviate hayfever and allergy symptoms such as runny or congested nose and sneezing. The treatment can reduce symptoms by 50% to 100%, with effects lasting 3-6 months. (Severe hayfever cases may require a second treatment after 4 weeks. Note that not all patients will respond to the treatment.)
What Happens During a HayTox Treatment?
First, we use a little saline to clean your nasal passages, then gently dry them with gauze. During the procedure, an atomiser is used to spray the HayTox into each nostril, similar to using a nasal spray. Afterward, you will lie back for 10 minutes to allow for absorption.
Does it Hurt?
No, the treatment is painless and does not involve any needles.
Are There Any Side Effects?
The treatment might cause minor hayfever-like symptoms for up to 10 minutes, and there is a low risk of a nosebleed afterward.
What Should I Do Before and After Treatment?
We may suggest using a nasal saline rinse twice a day for two weeks before treatment (e.g., Neilmed Sinus rinse kit). If you are on a nasal steroid, you can also take this daily pre-treatment, along with daily antihistamines. You can continue using oral antihistamines for 10 days post-treatment as the HayTox takes effect. After this, you may find you can discontinue your nasal steroids and antihistamines.
Is There a Cost?
HayTox is not funded by OHIP and is private pay only. The cost for consultation, assessment, and treatment is $325 per session, with effects lasting 3-6 months. Results are not guaranteed.
Who Should Avoid HayTox?
HayTox should be avoided if you:
- Are pregnant, breastfeeding, or allergic to Botulinum toxin
- Have Myasthenia Gravis, Eaton Lambert Syndrome, or Motor Neurone Disease
- Have severe nasal congestion or an upper respiratory tract infection (cold, flu, or sinus infection)
- Have an infection in the nasal passages
