What are Dermal Fillers?
Dermal fillers are injectable treatments used in cosmetic dermatology to restore volume and fullness to the skin. Composed mainly of substances that mimic naturally occurring elements in the body, they effectively reduce the appearance of wrinkles, fine lines, and sagging skin.
Creating volume and lift and giving beautiful definition to the face can be something we seek at any stage of life, whether to bring out our best features by volumizing areas that may be naturally a bit flat or lacking in shape, or to lift areas that have sagging and wrinkles due to age.

Cheeks
As we age we get a sunken appearance in the upper cheek and a sagging and wrinkling around the jowls and lower face. Dermal filler in the cheek gives a beautifully curved cheek, and a restoration of the youthful shape of the face.
Lipstick lines
Dermal filler can fill these lines that occur as the elastin and collagen in our skin deplete with age. This gives the area around the mouth a smoother and more youthful appearance.
Lips
Dermal fillers can give shape, definition and a beautiful yet not overdone volume to the lips. Ideal lip proportions are tailor made for each individual face to ensure overall harmony and balance.
Temples
The curve from the forehead to cheek can become sunken with age. Dermal filler in this area recreates this natural curve and helps to lift the brow
Nasolabial folds
With age the lines from the corners of our lips to the nose can become deepened, giving an older sagging appearance to our face. Filling these lines will lift the area giving it a rejuvenated look.
Marionette lines
Marionette lines run from the corners of the mouth to the chin. Treating this area offers support and structure to the lower face and can also greatly improve the sad look that occurs with age.
Jawline
Dermal fillers can give definition to the jawline with a beautiful result. For women this can restore a heart shaped face, for men give a more contoured, defined and strong jaw line.
Chin
With age the chin can recede and the skin become ice pick in appearance. Dermal fillers can be used to give the chin a smooth appearance and a balanced projection.

Why do we get sagging and wrinkles? As we age our bone resorps leading to a flatter face with wider eye sockets and a broader looking lower face. The fat pads that fill the face and cheek diminish and the ligaments that hold them become more lax leading to a sagging around the eyes and lower face, jowls, jawline and neck. The collagen and elastin in the skin dimmish through both aging and sun damage giving wrinkles and sagging, less elastic skin. All these factors together create the features of aging.
What is a dermal filler? The most commonly used dermal fillers are made of hyaluronic acid (HA). Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance found in abundance in youthful skin, it combines with water to give the skin volume and plumpness.

Filler treatment is not advised within 2 weeks of dental treatment.

We always recommend using daily SPF to protect your skin against damaging UV rays. UV exposure will age skin quicker and increase fine lines, reduce skin elasticity, and increase sagging and pigmentation.Importantly UV exposure can cause skin cancer.
There are also topical skin care products that can help hydrate and repair the skin, while not having the same impact as filler treatment, they can help keep the skin healthy and give it more glow.
We are happy to advise all our patients on products suitable for them and carry a range of medical grade skin care products.
